ABOUT THE PROJECT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;<strong><em>Cooperation for the Improvement of Sustainable and Organic Social Farming Practices in Prison<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (EcoFarms4Prisons) project is coordinated by <strong>Germany <\/strong>in partnership with<strong> Italy, Portugal, and T\u00fcrkiye<\/strong>. The project is supported under the ERASMUS+ Programme KA220-VET. The project aims to<strong> promote sustainable social farming in prisons <\/strong>by equipping educators with the skills to teach inmates organic and environmentally friendly farming practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. TRAINING PROCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.1. Theoretical Training (July 2025)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theoretical training phase, conducted online in July 2025, covered the following topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Soil preparation and improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sowing and planting applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harvesting techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certification process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.2. Practical Training (October 19\u201324, 2025)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical training for trainers who completed the theoretical phase took place in <strong>Portugal <\/strong>from October 19\u201324, 2025 (5 days, excluding travel time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_01-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_01-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_01-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_01-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_01.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. PRACTICAL TRAINING CONTENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.1. Soil Preparation and Planting Operations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soil preparation stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Planting rows were superficially tilled to aerate the soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stones and small plant residues were removed using a rake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compost was spread evenly on the surface with a rake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drip irrigation hoses were laid along the planting rows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holes were dug at designated seedling locations using sticks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seedlings were planted in the holes, completing the planting process<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.2. Compost Production<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Materials required:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>60% organic matter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40% plant waste (fresh and dry plant residues)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant residues obtained during production and after harvest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Production process:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fresh plant waste is stored in buckets, and bacterial activation is initiated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fresh plant material, organic matter, and dry plant waste are sequentially fed into the grinder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Materials are accumulated in layers and mixed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mixture is covered with a tarp and left to compost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A temperature test conducted one day later indicated that the compost reached 70\u00b0C<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This temperature indicates that the composting reaction is progressing successfully.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.3. Vermicompost Production<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Species used:<\/strong> Red California worms (<em>Eisenia fetida<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reason for selection:<\/strong> These worms are highly effective organic consumers, rapidly processing all organic matter they encounter when kept in groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Feeding:<\/strong> Vegetable and fruit waste remaining during the production phase and after harvest is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regular and adequate feeding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining appropriate soil moisture levels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protection from high temperatures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protection from frost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_02-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_02-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_02-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_02-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ecofarms4prisons.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Portugal-Pilot-Course_02.jpg 1282w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. TRAINING OUTCOMES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following outcomes were achieved during the five-day training:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Simple equipment uses:<\/strong> It was demonstrated that soil can be effectively worked using simple agricultural tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Production planning:<\/strong> The importance of planning and sowing crops at specific intervals according to demand and needs was emphasised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Record keeping:<\/strong> Methods for recording yields from each planting row and conducting productivity analyses were learned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crop rotation technique:<\/strong> The principle of maintaining soil fertility by rotating crops across different rows was adopted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Certification:<\/strong> Organic farming training was successfully completed, and a trainer certificate was obtained<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five-day practical training conducted in Portugal proved highly effective in translating theoretical knowledge into practice.
